About ResPECT
Turning patient narratives into insight that changes care
ResPECT is a Horizon Europe project developing an innovative Generative AI solution to improve how patient burden is identified, understood, and addressed in cancer and mental health care. By transforming patient narratives into structured and actionable insights, ResPECT aims to improve quality of life, support clinical decision-making, and strengthen healthcare system planning.
Through close collaboration with patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, technology developers, and policymakers, the project places users at the centre of innovation.
ResPECT is part of five projects in the GenAI4EU Health Cluster, set up by the European Commission with the ambition to develop trustworthy and human-centred GenAI for healthcare and biomedical research. Together with GenAI4Care, ResPECT focuses on developing GenAI solutions around the needs of patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals. However, ResPECT additionally aims to translate patient experiences into insights that can support the bigger picture of health policy and system-level decision-making.
The ResPECT Virtual Assistant

Describes symptoms, feelings and daily life in their own words — by voice, chat or text, in their own language.
Voice & text input
02 · Core
AI Agent
A trustworthy, multilingual generative AI core that structures narratives together with patient-reported outcomes and clinical data.
Explainable
Privacy-by-design
Human oversight
03 · Assistants
Medical Assistant
Structured summaries with guideline-linked recommendations for clinicians.
Policy
Policy Assistant
A dashboard of real-time burden trends for policymakers and health systems.

Why breast cancer and depression
Cancer & mental health focus
Breast cancer and depression were selected because both involve complex, evolving burdens that are not fully captured by standardised questionnaires alone. Together, they allow ResPECT to test its approach across two distinct care settings and assess whether patient narratives can improve support for patients, healthcare professionals and health systems.
Breast cancer
Breast cancer was selected because patients often experience complex and changing burdens throughout treatment and survivorship, including physical symptoms, emotional distress, social challenges and financial strain. Although patient-reported outcome measures are increasingly used in cancer care, they may not fully capture these lived experiences or translate them into timely, guideline-linked clinical action.
Depression
Depression was chosen because symptoms and patient experiences are highly individual, dynamic and often difficult to express through standardised questionnaires alone. Effective care depends on understanding emotional state, context and changes over time, while digital tools must also be sensitive, trustworthy and accessible.
